Have you ever blown on a pair of dice before rolling them, or pressed the button on a slot machine a little harder, as if that might change your luck? You’re not alone. Humans have a remarkable tendency to believe we can influence random events – a psychological trap known as the illusion of control. It makes us feel as though we have power over outcomes that are, in truth, governed by chance.

Why We Seek Control

The need for control is deeply human. It gives us a sense of safety, predictability, and meaning in a world that often feels uncertain. When faced with situations where outcomes are random – whether in games, investments, or even everyday life – our brains instinctively try to find patterns and causes, even when none exist.

Psychologist Ellen Langer first described this phenomenon in 1975. In one of her studies, participants believed they had a better chance of winning a lottery if they chose their own ticket rather than being given one at random. Objectively, the odds were identical, but the sense of personal choice created an illusion of influence.

Rituals, Routines, and Lucky Charms

The illusion of control shows up in countless ways. Gamblers might have lucky coins or insist on sitting at a particular slot machine. Sports fans wear the same jersey for every match, convinced it helps their team win. Even in daily life, we might press the pedestrian crossing button repeatedly, as if that will make the light change faster.

These small rituals don’t actually alter outcomes, but they do provide comfort. They give us a sense of agency in situations where we otherwise feel powerless. In that way, the illusion of control can be emotionally soothing, even when we know, rationally, that it makes no difference.

When the Illusion Becomes Costly

In some cases, the illusion of control is harmless – even motivating. It can make us feel more engaged and optimistic. But in other contexts, it can lead to poor decisions and risky behaviour.

In Ireland, where betting and gaming are part of the cultural landscape, this illusion can have real consequences. Many people believe they can “read” patterns in random outcomes – that a horse is “due a win” after several losses, or that a slot machine “must pay out soon.” These are classic examples of faulty reasoning that can lead to financial losses, because they rely on emotion rather than probability.

The same thinking can appear in investing, where short-term success is mistaken for skill rather than luck. When we believe we can control random outcomes, we may take bigger risks than we should.

The Brain’s Pattern-Seeking Habit

Part of the explanation lies in how our brains evolved. We are wired to detect patterns – a skill that once helped our ancestors survive. Recognising cause and effect allowed us to predict danger and find food. But this same ability can misfire when we see patterns in randomness.

When we experience a streak of wins or losses, our brains automatically try to make sense of it. We might think we’ve discovered a “strategy” or that our luck is changing. It feels meaningful, and that feeling is powerful – even when it’s an illusion.

How to Recognise the Illusion

Becoming aware of the illusion of control is the first step to avoiding its traps. Here are some signs you might be caught in it:

  • You believe certain rituals or actions increase your chances of winning.
  • You feel you can “sense” when luck is about to change.
  • You judge your skill based on short-term results.
  • You struggle to accept that some outcomes are purely random.

When you notice these thoughts, pause and ask yourself: Is there really anything I can control here? Often, the honest answer is no – and that’s perfectly fine.

Finding Peace in Uncertainty

Accepting randomness can be difficult, but it can also be liberating. Instead of trying to control the uncontrollable, we can focus on what truly is within our power: our decisions, our strategies, and how we respond to wins and losses.

In games, as in life, the goal isn’t to master chance but to understand it. When we let go of the illusion of control, we don’t become better at predicting the future – but we do become better at living with it.
